So, I am cheating for the big dinner tomorrow. Ordered sides, a pecan pie, and dinner rolls from the local upscale-ish grocery store (none of that $20 butter though), but I am going all out with the turkey like I always do. Year 2 of separating it while raw, searing the skin side on all parts, packing breasts/thighs/legs with thyme and sage/salt/sugar to sous vide. The dark meat will go for 24 hours at 150, and the white meat for 12 at 130. I did this last year and it was so damn amazing. Just a quick second sear on the stove after everything else is ready to serve. It’s only the folks and I, and it’s the perfect game plan. Tossed the carcass, neck, and wing tips into the stock pot with water and herbs/mirepoix for gravy. That will simmer for a few hours, and I’ll use some of the meat along with the giblets to give the gravy good lumps. ;)

Oh, no! I’ve been nearly legally blind my whole life, and got corrective implanted lenses when I had cataract surgery, and now it is nearly 20-20! Absolute heaven!!!!! Eight years of heavy bifocals, and 50 years of hard contacts, and now there is sight!
Be so grateful for such a wonderful gift! (and Medicare, so I was able to get it!)

Like anything on the human body, things atrophy over time. Genetically I got my father’s eyes, my mother has been nearsighted her whole life, has worn glasses since she was seven. My father never wore glasses until his late 50s, for reading. He’s 70 now and has to wear corrective glasses while driving.

As I have for several years now, I’ll be having Thanksgiving dinner at our church outreach center tomorrow. The master cooks (not me, needless to say) will arrive at 4 AM to get things going. The menu includes practically everything, including ham and roast beef for the numerous turkey haters around here.

I didn’t need them until I got the CATz Lasik done at the end of last year and traded being very nearsighted for being 20/20 at distance. The nice thing about readers is they’re so cheap I can buy lots and stash ‘em all over the place.

My surgeon gave me that option, I wanted distance. He went with distance vision for himself but said his Mom chose monovision and he didn’t push either option as superior. I’d been wearing glasses since eighth grade so I was fine with needing readers.

That works for those who tolerate monovision. A friend had her cataract surgery with the lens set that way and loves it. However, in my case, although that is how my contacts worked, I always hated it. So, with my recent cataract surgery, my eyes are adjusted for “nearish” vision and I have to wear glasses for movies or driving. But, despite that, my vision is far better than it’s been since around age 7.

They “tracked” junior high school students (where you went to classes with the same students on the same academic level) and my mother thought that was inappropriate. She was particularly livid that the junior high would not enroll me in home economics, because the guidance counselor said that was for “Mexican and black girls destined to become maids.”
I hated John Foster Dulles Junior High School and was glad to leave after four months. And yeah, it was seriously racist. Not that Klein High School was much better, although the current African-American mayor of Houston, Sylvester Turner, graduated from Klein in 1973.

I had to wear bifocals since I was 9 because I had double astigmatisms in both eyes. Kids used to call me “six eyes”. Oh, I hated that. Then when I went to high school I had to go to trifocals and I’ve had to wear them ever since. They can’t do Lasix on me because of the severe astigmatisms…

I date back to the time when boys took industrial arts aka shop and girls took home ec. I think we had to take them in 7th or 8th grade. The other grade was art for all of us. However, I did not move on to the state level. In retrospect, perhaps I should have.

At the time, it never occurred to me how anachronistic both shop and home ec were, to some extent. But I did appreciate the opportunity to learn elementary wood and metal working, and even typesetting. Now kids would learn CAD and CNC, 3D printing, and probably not ever get close to life-threatening power tools. I guess home ec now is more like home and family management, and how to prepare the living room for the Roomba to clean. We’re not yet at the point where we have to program Rosie the Robot.

Trump May Move Ahead With Plans To Make Asylum Seekers Wait In Mexico: Report (Huffington Post)
Trying to get around the court order to process asylum claims, the Trump maladministration is drafting policy documents to require those seeking asylum to stay in Mexico unless they can demonstrate fear of staying there.
The proposal, dubbed “Remain in Mexico,” would be a dramatic change in government policy, which currently allows those seeking political asylum to remain in the United States while their applications are processed. The [Washington] Post, citing planning documents and three sources within the Department of Homeland Security, said that under President Donald Trump’s new plan anyone who couldn’t prove a “reasonable fear” of persecution in Mexico would be required to wait there.
It’s unclear if the policy would survive a court challenge, and a federal judge this week ordered the government to process all asylum applications after the Trump administration attempted to bar anyone in the U.S. illegally from doing so.
DHS spokeswoman Katie Waldman told the Post in a statement that there were no urgent plans to implement the policy, saying “every single legal option is on the table to secure our nation and to deal with the flood of illegal immigrants at our borders.”

An illegal immigrant is someone who evades border control and enters the USA without the proper paperwork, or who overstays a visit when the proper paperwork expires.
Likewise, a flood suggests hundreds of thousands or millions, when in fact the number is no more than 10,000 to 20,000 per year.

I watched a video the other day of a Japanese tattoo artist named Horitomo who is over here on an O-1 visa. He’s an excellent tattoo artist; some of his work reflects Japanese woodblock art. However (and I know this from going there), tattooing is for all intents and purposes illegal in Japan and Horitomo thought he’d do better if he was in a country where tattooing has a better reputation. Now he’s here in the States and his list for an appointment is four years long.
When I was in Japan last month, we visited a public onsen (hot spring baths) and there were signs in English telling us that people with tattoos were not allowed. Our guide told us there was a discussion going on in Japanese society about this, because so many tourists are coming here, and so many of them have tattoos. But for right now, tattooing is frowned upon in a big way because it’s a symbol of the Japanese gangsters or yakuza.

Joe, hang in for cataract repair. As I said later, the doc was afraid to try to pull my bad eye into 20/20 because of astigmatism. So he focused it for reading and then did the better eye for distance. He said it was too big a pull for the bad eye, and Could result in the operation failing. I would have been in your shoes if I hadn’t worn hard contacts. Couldn’t wear soft because of the astig. The hard lenses stopped the continual progress of the astig. getting worse. Was getting new prescriptions 3x a year, and only once in the 50 years+ following the contacts at age 15.

After this morning, I just ran 30 days in a row, 260 miles. (and boy am i tired)
A running log can be helpful, or it can become the seductive Siren’s song.
- a log should be a story; a reflection of what you have done; like a diary.
- It’s also a good tool to keep you on track and focused toward specific goals
- it should not, in my opinion, ever be about building up statistics. the log is a post hoc tool, not a goal in itself.
Aside from the love of running, if you are aiming, however gently, to improve, or master a specific race, then you will inevitably have to focus on things that don’t always pad or increase the log. Two simple examples are the pre long race taper, and rest days. There should never be tension because what you need to do doesn’t also build up the log.
I had been trying to figure out how to get over repeatedly dismal monday mornings. After long run sundays i couldnt wake up monday and run at all. Each monday was a rest day and not by choice. So i tweaked this and that and found a winning formula.
I knew this day would be coming eventually even though I wasn’t trying or paying all that much attention - fighting back the Siren. And I didnt do anything different than I otherwise would “to ensure the victory” - i just kept loping along daily and it just happened naturally.
My longest streak ever was 85 days and 479 miles back in 2014. The Siren was compelling back then and i really pushed it.
Still…exciting

So I was looking at the Senate map for 2020, and unless Espy pulls off a miracle in the Mississippi runoff it will be a hard slog to get to 50 for the Democrats. GOP Senators in Az, Co and Me will be primary targets, and if the Democrats have good candidates they may be able to pickoff one from Tx, Ga or NC. But Doug Jones will have a hard time surviving without a pedophile to run against; with Nelson’s loss* he is the last Democratic Senator south of Virginia. We need Tx, Ga and/or NC to turn purple to break the reactionary stranglehold on the Senate. I’d love to vote for someone to defeat Yurtle, but I just don’t see it happening.

Fort Bend ISD was the first school district I went to in Texas way back in 1973 and my mother absolutely HATED it with the heat of a billion suns. We’d just moved from Northern California and the culture shock was severe. They “tracked” junior high school students (where you went to classes with the same students on the same academic level) and my mother thought that was inappropriate. She was particularly livid that the junior high would not enroll me in home economics, because the guidance counselor said that was for “Mexican and black girls destined to become maids.”
I hated John Foster Dulles Junior High School and was glad to leave after four months. And yeah, it was seriously racist. Not that Klein High School was much better, although the current African-American mayor of Houston, Sylvester Turner, graduated from Klein in 1973.
Fort Bend is still segregated depending on where you are, though Southern Fort Bend will vigorously deny it. There is a war over redistricting right now because some of the white kids in a rich white neighborhood would be zoned to a primarily black school. It is BAD.
We’re in Northern Fort Bend, where everyone is mixed in together. My kid’s schools are some of the most diverse in the country. My husband teaches and coaches at our high school and it never ceases to make me smile seeing all of the different races mixed in together in the stands. Not just sitting next to each other, friends.
I had a young employee from India visiting. I took him to a game. He said, “Will I need to show my papers?” I said, “Bring them, but everyone will just assume you’re a student.” Yep, that’s exactly what happened.
Fort Bend is huge now. And there is definitely a difference between the Northern and Southern halves. Ironic how that worked out.

Like anything on the human body, things atrophy over time. Genetically I got my father’s eyes, my mother has been nearsighted her whole life, has worn glasses since she was seven. My father never wore glasses until his late 50s, for reading. He’s 70 now and has to wear corrective glasses while driving.
Over the past ten years, I have really started to notice that driving at night is a an ever-increasing strain without high-beams, which I obviously cannot use all the time.

Turkey accused the United States on Wednesday of trying to turn a blind eye to the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul, and dismissed comments from President Donald Trump on the issue as “comic”.
Trump vowed on Tuesday to remain a “steadfast partner” of Saudi Arabia, despite saying that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman may have known about the plan to murder to Khashoggi, a U.S. resident and Washington Post columnist.

And Germany let itself be used by other European nations who refused to take in refugees in any large numbers. They would be fully justified in insisting on an European quota system based on population and/or share of GDP, which would still leave Germany with the largest share but not with the overwhelming numbers that it has now.

Nixon has been praised recently for being better than Trump, not selling us out to Russia, and having some real progressive accomplishments, but Rachel’s program showed how Nixon was responsible for torpedoing peace talks in 1968. It’s certainly possible that the talks would have failed anyway and the carnage continued, but Nixon’s intervention guaranteed this — and as a result, tens of thousands of Americans, 100,000’s Vietnamese — and a million Cambodians perished as a result of his election. To me that is all she was doing, discussing how you position for a political fight against fascist thinking and whether halting immigration is good until you get your own people back under control and into allowing it.
That is a huge problem in today’s politics. There can be no discussion. I’m not going to blame both sides. To me it is clear conservatives are the rock that won’t budge. The media just makes it into both sides because it is easy and they can use nothing gets done as proof.
Add that atmosphere to anything Hillary says and it is going to be bad.
And note the use of the word “centrist” politics in the piece. That alone is a dangerous word in today’s politics, but it is the path to getting back to normal.
I mean you can understand why a family would be upset for obvious reasons. That’s their family being portrayed on screen and sometimes audiences can’t separate fictional scenes inspired by real events with the reality. That’s why imo historical fiction novels are a little tough for me to read although I enjoy fictional realism. A similar but different type of fiction. I look forward to seeing the movie too. That scene where Katherine Johnson (Taraji P Henson) had to run halfway across the complex to find a bathroom she could use… turns out, NASA was the one place in the entire State of Virginia that didn’t have segregated bathrooms.
That is cinematic license: instead of showing all the small and petty ways in which people of color were discriminated it, they boiled it down to a very major symbol.
I recall the big battle scene in Braveheart in which the English cavalry charge and impale themselves on Scottish spears.
Except it wasn’t that way: the English crossed Stirling Bridge four abreast and tried to reform into line in boggy ground across the bridge, whereupon Scottish spearmen descended on them and cut them to bits.
But that, cinematically speaking, would have generated some degree of sympathy for the poor helpless horses and riders.
The movie showed them getting their just deserts*. And the point was, it was impetuous for the English to attack across the bridge when they could have crossed in formation a bit farther upstream, but did not wait.
*that is the correct spelling: “deserts” with stress on second syllable as in “what one deserves”.

If not for Jack Ruby’s intervention, Lee Harvey Oswald might very well still be alive (he would be 79). 9 years old. Third grade in Catholic School. You can imagine the shock to the nuns and priests. It was bad…a pall over the whole school.
When I was picked up from school by my father, there was no talk. How could he talk to a nine year old? Kennedy was a hero to the first generation Catholic family in America.
That whole Friday was a life marker, one you can never forget, The whole weekend was just unbelievably historic and so much happened right before our eyes on TV.
Shiplord’s YouTube above with Walter brings it all back. I don’t know if I wanted to remember, but that did it.
In ways, I think that got me into reading more historic, biographic, police and crime books than any sci-fi or comedy. I read a whole lot of Kennedy from that day on.

I was in second grade, and we had just come in from a school ‘hike’ around the neighborhood surrounding the school, ironically (JFK encouraged hiking and my elementary school took it seriously - they’d march entire classrooms full of kids around the neighborhood).
Once back in the classroom, our teacher Mrs. Berryman hushed us and told us what had happened and announced that school would let out early that day. One kid made a remark to the effect of ‘Oh, no, not another one’ - and was sent to the principal’s office.
I remember we had family over to our house that weekend, and a couple of cousins and I were playing with the radio. We hit one station that was playing mourning music and I remember thinking that it was the most grotesque music I’d ever heard.
And it rained all weekend.

I was in 7th grade. The vice-principal came on the intercom and announced that the President had been “fired upon” in Dallas. Now in my 11-year-old understanding of the English language, “fired upon” meant “shot at but not hit”. So it was a surprise when after that class they had the news playing over the PA in the common areas and I realized he’d actually been shot. A slow-rolling shock.
I was old enough to understand the president was dead and the man they said murdered him was just shot on live TV in front of my eyes.

He was celebrating.
Saw Jackie walking off the plane wearing her blood stained dress and I’m glad it was a black and white set we had because it toned the blood stains down.

I was in the third grade. Around 1PM the second grade teacher came in to tell us Kennedy had been shot at.
Couple minutes later the principal came in and told us to go home that he had been murdered.
We were in shock. We left school, the custodian set the flag at half mast. He was crying.
Walking home, loud music coming from the house of the Republican committeeman.
He was celebrating.
Saw Jackie walking off the plane wearing her blood stained dress and I’m glad it was a black and white set we had because it toned the blood stains down.
Went to bed and had bad dreams of nuclear retaliation.
I remember watching TV Oswald coming out of the police station. Mom was on the phone saying she hoped he was put in the electric chair for what he did.
I saw Oswald get shot and Mom screamed in the phone that justice had been done.
World never was the same.
I was seven, second grade, Catholic school in Havelock, N.C. The nuns were keening. Eerie as hell. Got out early. Mom picked us up, in shock. My Dad is crying to Barber’s Adagio for Strings. Still can’t sit through that piece without weeping.
